Shahid was born to actor parents, Pankaj Kapur and
Neelima Azim in 1981. The couple divorced when Shahid
was three so he continued to live with his mother and
was until recently not very close with his father.
Before acting Shahid modeled and appeared in many popular
music videos. He was also a member of famed choreographer,
Shiamak Daver's dance troop and can be seen in many
films including Taal and Dil To Pagal Hai. In addition,
in 1998, Shahid landed a Pepsi commercial with Shahrukh
Khan, Kajol, and Rani Mukherjee at the height of the
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai phenomenon. The ad became very popular
and Shahid went on to do many more including a Fuji
Film Commercial with Aishwarya Rai.
At that time Shahid was shy and lanky. When he approached
Ken to cast him in the lead of Ishq Vishk opposited
Amrita Rao and Shenaz, the director told him that he
wanted someone who would look boyish yet would have
a body of a man. He was rejected.
Shahid took Ken's word seriously. He joined a gym and
began working on his body. After six months Shahid's
with an absolutely toned body approached Ken Ghosh again
and impressed with his hard work the director decided
to cast him in the lead. The small budget film soon
became a huge hit and Shahid was an instant star. He
was being called the "Next Shahrukh Khan",
yet he wasn't offered any other films for few months.
Producers and directors had no subjects for a 22 year
old guy, but soon he was flooded with offers. Unlike
many young actors, Shahid chose his projects carefully.
He wanted to build his own career and not get ahead
because of the success of his parents.
After the release of Ishq Vishk in 2003, Shahid won
the Best Newcomer Male Filmfare Award along with all
of the other major debut awards.
In 2004, he starred in a romantic thriller called Fida
opposite Kareena Kapoor and Fardeen Khan as well as
a romantic comedy titled Dil Maange More opposite Soha
Ali Khan, Ayesha Takia, and Tulip Joshi. Both films
flopped, but Shahid recieved great reviews. This bad
luck followed Shahid into 2005 with the releases of
Deewane Huye Paagal, Vaah! Life Ho To Aisi, and Shikhar.
Once again the films bombed at the Box Office, but Shahid
was highly appreciated. He even recieved a Best Actor
Screen Award Nomination for Shikhar that year.
In 2006, Shahid's luck changed. He starred in 36 China
Town, a murder mystery-comedy opposite Kareena Kapoor
and Akshaye Khanna. The film was a semi-hit in India
and a hit overseas. The next month, Shahid's comedy
Chup Chup Ke once again opposite Kareena Kapoor released
and he recieved rave reviews as the film went on to
be successful.
In the summer of 2006, Shahid embarked on his first
world tour, Rockstars 2006, along with Salman Khan,
Kareena Kapoor, John Abraham, Mallika Sherawat, Zayed
Khan, and Esha Deol. Shahid stole the stage from his
older counterparts and got praised for his performances.
In 2006, Shahid's fourth film with Amrita Rao, Vivah,
was released and became a blockbuster. The film brought
Shahid great praise, his biggest box office success,
and a Star Screen Award nomination for Best Actor. Shahid
released Fool n Final opposite Ayesha Takia in 2007.
The film was a complete flop, but Shahid was liked and
recieved acclaim for his dancing. He is now awaiting
the release of Jab We Met, opposite Kareena Kapoor and
an untitled film by Aziz Mirza opposite Vidya Balan.
Since the release of Fida, Shahid was romatically involved
with actress Kareena Kapoor. The two were frequently
seen at events together and were planning to marry when
the time is right. They were together for 4 and 1/2
years before the relationship ended in September of
2007.
Shahid is currently focusing more on his professional
career and will begin work on Rajkumar Santoshi's next
with Katrina Kaif.
